What is Fascial Stretch Therapy™ or FST™?

FST™ is the groundbreaking system of assisted manual mobility protocols directed at increasing range of motion, decompressing and naturally lubricating joints, reducing movement pain or discomfort, accelerating recovery, and even improving athletic performance. It is administered on a massage table, with the athlete focusing primarily on breathing under the guidance of a trained practitioner.

What is Fascia?

Fascia (pronounced Fas-ci-a) is the subdermal connective tissue system of the body that penetrates through and wraps around muscles, nerves, organs, and just about everything else in your body. That’s why FST™ has the potential to positively or negatively impact your body, mind, and spirit!

Fascia is a system that acts as a unit and is never in isolation. It moves smoothly and has a high degree of flexibility as you move through your entire range of motion in its normal state.

When it is compromised, its pliability reduces. It starts to restrict adjacent tissue by “gluing” to it. This will limit your active range of motion, increasing the risk of injury, and in some extreme cases, may cause significant pain in the affected area.

The fascia research began surfacing in the late ’90s and continues today. In 2017, research at the University of Arizona Medical School on the effects of FST™ on chronic non-specific low back pain showed significantly improved outcomes.

What is a FST™ session?

Every session begins with an assessment. We will identify challenging movements or areas of the body and set up a specific goal for the session. Testing and retesting are essential to understand if you react well to the treatment since every person reacts differently, even as you progress through sessions. Nothing is left to the guesswork.

You would spend most of your time on a massage table, lying on your back or side. At times one of your legs would be stabilized in place by a soft strap to allow the practitioner to reach deeper angles. One of the cornerstones of the treatment is a pain-free manipulation along fascial lines to take advantage of every element of mobility, joint capsule, muscle, and nervous system.

Questions and Insights that come up all the time

Massage primarily focuses on the soft tissue of the muscle in a localized area. It also promotes a better flow of liquids to and from the targeted zone. This does not guarantee an increased range of motion long-term.

FST™, on the other hand, focuses on the multiple layers of fascia, which crosses every organ, nerve, joint, and muscle in the body. Since fascia connects everything in the body, it aims to improve the function of the whole kinetic chain rather than one isolated muscle. It also unlocks the mobility from a joint by centrating the corresponding bone in its proper position within a joint.

People of all ages! Any patient cleared by their physician for stretching and active movement, fitness enthusiasts, athletes of all levels, including professionals.

Every movement modality is just a tool. Some of these tools may work better for your body than others and to a different degree at different times. FST™ adds another unexplored option to your recovery toolkit. This is why we continually assess and reassess from session to session and even within the session itself. You will know for sure how FST™ helps you.

One of the main points of FST™ is to be pain-free. The practitioner will teach you how to achieve a deeper relaxation of the muscle by engaging your parasympathetic nervous system through breathing. The engagement of this system cannot take place if you are in pain, which tenses the body.

Since the FST™ system was developed in collaboration with NFL athletes, this sport sees the most participation. Teams like Toronto Argos, Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, BC Lions, and Arizona Cardinals take advantage of this modality.

Other team sports like Baseball and Basketball have experienced FST™ as well. Many other professional athletes also rely on FST™ to maintain their bodies.
