Corporate Wellness

Office struggle is real

Whether you are straight out of university, a single parent balancing multiple jobs, or a baby-boomer getting ready for retirement, the work environment is highly competitive and demands only increase every year. Add to that all the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is no surprise that it is taking a toll on the physical and emotional health of your “office” workers.

Working from home almost entirely erased the boundary of work and private life. Access to smartphones, laptops, tablets and other smart devices sets up an unrealistic and unhealthy expectation to work around the clock. Even though companies may not voice that expectation, many workers feel obligated to work in this blurred environment without disconnecting for a proper recovery. This jeopardizes their effectiveness, satisfaction, and health long-term.

Office workers around the world are suffering from increased stress, stress-induced anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Often in silence and in isolation, until it is too late. The burnout often results in stress-induced leave-of-absence or disability.

The issue lies with the fact that remote workplaces, and even conventional workplaces, rarely if ever, are set up or promoted healthy habits or necessary skills to impact individual’s health. Unfortunately, the educational system is not equipped either to offer these crucial self-care skills and healthy habits before entering the workforce.

And so, it is left to each person to seek knowledge and optimize their life, health, and performance. The high-demand, on-the-go environment frequently leads to sleep deficiency and many other non-supportive behaviors, as well as outright bad habits, and coping strategies. One such example is a 20% increase in new claims for mental-health drugs.

And it is not just the employees that suffer. It has significant impact on the bottom line of the organizations as a direct consequence of these immediate and extended health issues.

Corporate wellness events offer an accessible way for employees to explore and become interested in wellness topics. We know that a good support system is invaluable in achieving sustainable change. So having coworkers who may be working towards similar goals and have access to the same information is empowering and bonding. And the sense of camaraderie and community is one of the crucial criteria in developing trust and reducing the harmful effects of stress.

In the spirit of such camaraderie, organizations may run weight-loss challenges, health weeks, and other goal-oriented competitions and even fundraisers.

There are many ways to keep your employees engaged and excited about the health change. Frequently all it takes is the support. In the past, we provided Lunch-and-Learn sessions, Team-building health oriented segments of Town Hall meetings, on-demand informative videos, and virtual workouts to our corporate clients.

We cover a wide range of health and wellness-related topics from physical activity, healthy nutrition and nourishment, stress management, immune system boosting strategies, disease prevention, and mobility gains. We are also happy to explore topic important for your organization.
